Kindness of Strangers: This Time From a Fitness Expert

Some of you have commented on my previous posts about kindness from strangers, from taxi drivers who refuse payment to a man who gave me his umbrella in the rain. Here is another example, different in kind but the same in spirit.

A fitness expert named Marcel Dinkins came across my kettlebell swing videos on Instagram. She read that I welcome feedback, and then she did something unexpected: she recorded a custom video message with detailed, expert corrections for my technique. Frame by frame, she walked through what I was doing wrong and how to fix it.

She did not ask for anything in return. When I tried to send her a gift card as thanks, she would not accept it.

This is a particular kind of generosity that deserves recognition. Marcel is a well-respected fitness professional. Her time and expertise have real market value. She chose to spend both on a stranger because she saw someone trying to improve and wanted to help. No sales pitch, no follow request, no ask. Just one person helping another get better at something.

I am now working on incorporating her feedback into my kettlebell swing technique. On her advice, I recorded the video below from a sideways angle so I can better see areas for improvement. Watching it in light of what she taught me, I can already spot things to fix. The 24 kilogram (53 pound) Bulldog kettlebell is made by Iron Skull Fitness.
